In a rapidly changing business environment, advances in technology now has Australian businesses competing in the globally economy. Industries and whole sectors are experiencing significant shifts and trends such as digital disruption for example in more recent years has challenged traditional business models - think Uber, think AirBNB, think Netflix. These trends and others such as artificial intelligence or quantum computing or are set to continue to provide businesses with competitive advantages and technology means competitors can arise and scale very quickly in today’s environment.

Digitisation and automation will have profound effects on the future labour markets how businesses plan and prepare to train, attract and retain highly skilled and digitally proficient staff will continue to be critical for businesses to prosper and flourish.

With government policy such as free trade agreements, or both major political parties announcing innovation policies, new markets and competition for talent and services with our trading partners will create winners and losers.

Exponential growth of technology, the shifting nature of the labour market in a sharing economy, the rise of entrepreneurism, the need for greater demographic inclusion will require a shift towards higher educational standards and the growth of the creative, knowledge and service economies in the future.

More will therefore be needed for Australia to reap the full benefits of digital innovation. The dividend of greater development and use of technology is not simply recording a better rank on an esoteric technology leader board or increasing the profitability of a few technology firms; a successful digital economy can materially lift living standards and quality of life for the whole country.

The Northern Territory Government's Digital Territory Strategy establishes, for the first time, a framework for maximising the opportunities of the digital age across our business, industry, education, community and government sectors.

Territory businesses, community and government will share the digital journey and together shape a vibrant digital home and marketplace for all Territorians, delivering better jobs, better business outcomes and better services to the community.

Digital advances represent a real opportunity for the Northern Territory to reduce disadvantage, remove the impact of 'tyranny of distance', opening up access to global markets and improve.
