“Sophisticated Sting: Business Email Compromise Missing Millions” aims to raise awareness about the dangers of Business Email Compromise (BEC) scams and how to prevent them. The event will feature a true story of how a complex crime could have been stopped by simple measures.

BEC scams are a type of cybercrime that can have devastating consequences for businesses. Criminals use social engineering tactics to trick employees into transferring money or sensitive information to fraudulent accounts. According to the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, BEC scams have resulted in losses of over $142 million in Australia.

Speaker Richard Magalad is a 30-year ICT veteran who started his career in mainframes with the Commonwealth Bank and then moved on to other markets from SME to large clients in shipping, mining, and heavy industries. He became IT Director in 2010 for a mining company with uranium, gold and diamond projects in Outback Australia, Laos, and Canada. He founded his IT Consulting Company in 1999 and currently works with two large Telcos and several Federal Government agencies. Mr. Magalad operates with a philosophy to never separate Cyber Security from Information Technology.
