About this event

Mentoring Matters! Professional communication and relationship-building matters!
The purpose of the ACS Mentoring Program is to provide an opportunity for members to help members; to connect individuals with those seeking advice and guidance to develop their careers.

Why communication & networking skills so important?
Business networking skills can play a valuable role when it comes to finding a job or increasing your hiring potential in Canberra.

The key to creating meaningful interactions is to take your eyes off yourself and place them on the other person. By giving them the attention first, you'll have a clear edge: People are naturally wired and looking for connection and positive affirmation -- to be seen and heard. And it all starts with asking the right questions.

Building relationships - The key to business, and a successful job hunt, is building strong interpersonal relationships over time with people around you, including your mentors.

To build a network of professional friends, you need to be open, honest, and genuinely engaged in their causes. Be more interested in their needs than your own; ask open-ended questions and get to know them as people first and sources of advice, second.

Work on your communication skills - Good communication skills are the most important factor in differentiating successful individuals in business, and any relationship including friendship, and mentorship.

We all know of people that are incredibly intelligent but lack the ability to communicate effectively, limiting their career progression. In networking, people are generally willing to help, but if you are unable to communicate what you want effectively, they will be unable to act upon it.

Hone an impressive elevator pitch - The 30-second elevator pitch remains a constant in the world of business and professional networking.

People pass judgements on others very quickly, so the elevator pitch is useful, and extremely important for summarising what value you can offer to a potential employer or others in as few words as possible.

Make sure your pitch exudes passion and personality, on top of key milestones and achievements. Your 30-second elevator pitch should include who are you, what you do and what value you can offer etc.
