About this event
ACS Canberra is hosting a Diversity & Inclusion panel session on Tuesday 8 March 2022 at the National Portrait Gallery to discuss "Addressing Australia's ICT Skills Shortage - a Diversity & Inclusion Approach" as part of International Women's Day celebrations.
According to the 2021 ACS Digital Pulse, only 29% of the technology workforce are female, almost half of the workforce does not have a formal technology qualification, there is a heavy reliance on skilled migration by the sector and there is a low number of indigenous tech workers. Yet, there is an expectation that across Australia there will be a need for over 1.1 million technology workers by 2026.
At this panel session, our panelists from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, will share their insights on how our profession can take new approaches to broaden the pipeline of ICT workers to addressing Australia's ICT skills shortage through a diversity & inclusion mindset.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ATTENDEES - COVID-19 SAFETY PLAN (Events):
1) Face mask: Wearing a mask when entering the venue and event room. Facemasks do not need to be worn when consuming food, drink or communicating with a person who is deaf or hard of hearing and visibility of the mouth (*Face masks will be available for guests while on site at the NPG)
2) Check-in CBR QR code: Due to the importance of contact tracing for COVID-19 purposes if required, it is important to have your attendance registered and scan the Check-in CBR QR code.
3) ACS event registration QR code: Upon your arrival, please make sure to have your ACS event registration QR code visible and ready for scan at the registration desk where your attendance will be recorded. You can find your QR code in your ACS event confirmation email and a reminder sent to you three days before the event; you can provide the QR code via your phone or a printed copy or a screenshot of your email etc.
4) Event Cancellation & Refund: All cancellations must be processed through the website, a refund will only be considered if it is at least 7 working days prior to the event.
5) Photography and/or filming may take place during this event, by accepting these terms you consent to this. Please let the ACS event manager know if you do not want your picture taken.
Speakers
Kate is an experienced tech sector leader and senior executive who has worked across the public, private and non-profit sectors.
She is the CEO of the Tech Council of Australia, the peak body representing the Australian tech sector.
She was formerly a Partner at Australian strategy and data analytics consulting company, AlphaBeta Advisers, founding and growing their Canberra office over four years until their acquisition by Accenture, when she became an Accenture MD and Global Strategy Lead for Data Analytics.
Prior to AlphaBeta, Kate worked for McKinsey & Company specialising in their digital and public sector practices.
She has also spent 15 years working in technology policy roles with the Australian Industry Group, National ICT Australia (now Data61), Network Ten, and the Federal Government.
Kate is passionate about growing Australia's tech sector, creating new jobs and businesses, and increasing the diversity of workers in the sector.
Professor Paddy Nixon
BSc(Hons) Liv, MA Dub, PhD Shef, FBCS FRSA FRSN
Professor Nixon holds a PhD in Computer Engineering from Sheffield University. A technologist and computer scientist, Professor Nixon was previously the Vice-Chancellor of the multi-campus Ulster University in Northern Ireland. No stranger to Australian shores, he moved to Tasmania in 2010 where he was Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research — delivering significant growth in both rankings and research funding—before returning to the United Kingdom.
Professor Nixon has a deep understanding of the nexus between industry and university research having had significant industrial and commercial experience through collaborations with INTEL, Microsoft Research, HP, Oracle and IBM as well as being involved in start-ups and establishing the Irish national early stage technology incubator.
He is deeply committed to the civic obligations of a university and recognises the critical and unique role the University of Canberra plays in the ACT. Professor Nixon believes that modern universities need meaningful engagement with their students, their staff, industry partners and the community to deliver consistent and compelling impact.
Emma Davidson is the ACT's Minister for Disability, Minister for Justice Health, Minister for Mental Health, Assistant Minister for Seniors, Veterans, Families and Community Services, and Member for Murrumbidgee.
She holds one of the six Greens seats in the 10th Legislative Assembly.
Emma is a former Woden Valley Community Council committee member and former Secretary at Pearce Community Centre. She was the former Convenor, and is now a member, of the Women's Electoral Lobby.
Emma has previously worked in social research and advocacy at the Women's Centre for Health Matters and at Equality Rights Alliance, managed online communications for the Australian Medical Association, was Director of Information Management with the Navy, worked in private sector software development, owned and managed a small retail business, and worked at Centrelink for seven years.
Charles has 25 years of Sales experience with the last 20 years focused on the Information & Technology sector. The last 15 years have seen Charles privileged to lead teams in a diverse range of Global and Asia Pacific Management roles. Charles experienced great success in building both direct sales, indirect sales, and partner teams. Having grown established partner teams and markets to establishing greenfields teams Charles enjoys implementing both the sales and operational rigor required to be successful in these markets. Having most recently built teams in APAC/APJ he has also built and managed businesses in North America, Europe, Africa, Middle East, GCR, Korea and Japan.
Whilst having a collaborative and direct management style, Charles sees the importance of being able to expand and adapt sales methodologies across international divisions of a business.
Whilst not detracting from global goals and targets, it is a focus of Charles to understand the cultural and commercial complexities of each region. Having a societal impact and giving back to the community is at the core of Charles's belief system. His core values being Trust, Family and Authenticity.

Registration
- Payment in full is required the time of booking in order for the registration to be valid.
- To avoid disappointment, ensure you pay for your booking(s) before the registration closing date. Anyone that has not received a confirmation email will not be on the event attendance list and therefore will not be admitted to the event.
- Online registration ends at the time stated on the event registration page.
Cancellation and Refund

- ACS reserves the right to change the program at any time. Every effort will be made to ensure a program of equivalent standard and members are updated with changes.

COVID-19 Event Attendance Compliance
By registering to attend an ACS in person event you are agreeing to the below terms and conditions
- If an attendee is displaying flu or cold like symptoms in the days leading up to the event and therefore is not able to attend, ACS will refund the registration fee.
- If an attendee comes to an event and is displaying flu or cold like symptoms they will be asked to leave
- We ask all ACS members to respect the social distancing guidelines, if an attendee repeatedly disregards these guidelines, they may be asked to leave
- ACS reserves the right to cancel the event within 24 hours' notice if either the speaker or the event host has advised us that they are exhibiting flu or cold like symptoms
- All attendees must provide a valid phone number and email address to be contacted on if there is reason to notify about a possible COVID-19 exposure
