As a small nation, Australia has always punched above its weight when it comes to technology. Even though it's not the first nation that springs to mind when technology innovation comes up, Australia has quietly been the source of some of the world's most influential inventions.

Medical ultrasounds, the bionic ear, Google Maps, the black box flight recorder, and the technology behind Wi-Fi – all had their genesis in Australia before being adopted by the wider world.

People may fail to realise that Australia has an incredible wealth of technology talent. As revealed in ACS Australia's Digital Pulse 2018, we lead the world regarding digital literacy. We have one of the best education systems in the world, an entrepreneurial spirit and a rapidly growing startup scene.

Innovation districts are popping up nationwide while venture capital and private equity funding continue to grow. When it comes to assets under management, it's now 3.5 times higher than it was in 2005.

Many of the nation's innovators have gone even further, leaving our shores to take on the world's most demanding crucible for aspiring tech companies. Silicon Valley is the world's most competitive arena for startups. In this place, the brightest founders and companies from all over the world go to compete for investor dollars and global attention. It's the Olympics for tech startups, where only the very best survive and thrive – and more than a few Australian startups have done that.

These people have gone to the US and shown the world what our ICT companies can do. They've shown that we have the talent and drive to be a major player in the world tech scene, capable of starting and managing companies with global reach.
